You actually create an image from the old instance, you did not create an snapshot, there is not an option to create snapshot of the instance per say.

EC2 create image to be able to recover from losing the private key.
The difference is largely semantic. The Create Image action does so by creating snapshots of the volumes and storing the other metadata that’s not kept inside the volumes for the instances.
