About this Hands-on Lab

In this lab, you’ll look at the SSH client and server options that work together to make secure connections, including the `ssh_config` and `sshd_config` files. You’ll view the file configurations and make some changes that ensure `root` users are not allowed to sign on via SSH.

Learning Objectives

Successfully complete this lab by achieving the following learning objectives:

Establish a Remote Administration Session to a Lab Server via an SSH Tunnel and the VNC Viewer App
  1. Establish a secure SSH tunnel from your local system to the lab server.
  2. Find and install the VNC viewer application for your host operating system.
  3. Connect to the remote server via the VNC viewer application and show how it’s a remote desktop session.
  4. Change the session graphics quality and speed.
Connect to the Remote Lab Server and View the Remote Administration Configuration Details
  1. Connect to the remote server via the command line and run the YaST tool with options to show the configuration of the Remote Management module.
  2. Restart the vncmanager service if problems occur with the remote administration service.

Additional Resources

In this lab, you'll be connecting from your local system to a lab system hosted by Linux Academy via an SSH tunnel. The solution video for the first task will show how to establish this connection, and then talk you through getting the VNC viewer application that will be used to connect graphically to the remote system via the SSH tunnel that was established.

Once connected via the VNC viewer, you'll see the remote desktop and be able to perform typical functions via the GUI interface. You'll also be looking at the VNC connection details and see how to affect the resolution, zoom, and other configuration options for the viewer itself.
