VPC Subnet and Instance Template region

In the custom vpc lab, while creating managed instance group, you selected the region=uswest1. Is this because the custom vpc subnet region is uswest1? What if students like me select a different region while creating the instance template, wont it fail? The reason for selection of that specific region is not clearly called out in the lecture. Please explain.
