My user account is set a Service Account User in IAM by my Admin account but cannot create VM in console

My user account is set a Service Account User in IAM by my Admin account. However when I try to create a VM in console it’s blocked with the message "Ask a project project owner to grant you the iam.serviceAccountUser role on the serivce account". I even went into my "ServiceExplorationLab" Project where I’m doing lab where I’m the owner and set an addtional role as service account user but still same issue. Any thoughts?
