Under Compute Engine/Metadata in the console I do not see my ssh key. I did ssh into the vm through the command line, so I know it is there.

Are you still in the same project that you were in for the terminal vm creation and connection? If you are under a different project now, that could be one reason why the ssh-keys are not showing up.
