Following the module EC2 meta-data and user data, I cannot retrieve the metadata while connected to instance as root with the curl command curl http://IP_address/latest/meta-data.
The user bash script was imported when I created the instance.

You can enable meta data for the instance from awscli. Also check to make sure you aren’t blocking this call via the instance’s iptables.
