is it a physical wire (fiber or something) that AWS has lain between the client & their access points, or is it using existing private networks to transfer the difference? I’m trying to understand the hardware difference between Direct Connect & VPN.

On the AWS resources, we can read, "AWS Direct Connect enables you to securely connect your AWS environment to your on-premises data center or office location over a standard 1 gigabit or 10 gigabit Ethernet fiber-optic connection. AWS Direct Connect offers dedicated high speed, low latency connection, which bypasses internet service providers in your network path." So it’s a fiber-optic that is connected directly to the AWS infrastructure and not to a standard ISP, so it reduce latency.
