Cloud skills — so hot right now

What skills are most in-demand in 2019? As with 2018, and 2017, cloud computing skills land right at the top of the list.

Every year, LinkedIn analyzes its data and publishes a list of the most in-demand professional skills. And for 2019, cloud computing was once again named the most sought-after hard skill. Looking through the rest of the list, several cloud-adjacent skills appear as well, including artificial intelligence (2), mobile application development (6), natural language processing (11), game development (13), software testing (22) and data science (23).

LinkedIn’s findings aren’t exactly a one-off, either. Glassdoor’s 50 Best Jobs in America for 2019 list is jammed with cloud-related jobs, such as data scientist, devops engineer, data engineer, and solutions architect, to name a few. Over at U.S. News & World Report, software developer beat out a heap of healthcare professions to snag the best job crown.

Cloud skills are obviously held in high esteem by various annual lists — but they’re also in  very high demand. In a recent survey, 94% of IT managers said it’s “at least somewhat difficult” to find candidates with the right cloud skills. The term “full-blown crisis” was even thrown around.

Full. Blown. Crisis.

These managers’ distress is backed up by Gartner TalentNeuron, which assigned a Hiring Scale of 78 for jobs requiring cloud computing skills. What does the Hiring Scale even mean? Essentially, the higher the score, the harder it is for employers to find good candidates. 78 is ranked as “difficult”, but close to tipping over into “very difficult”.

The high demand for cloud skills can even be glimpsed in unemployment data. The data isn’t precise enough to correlate exactly to cloud computing, but when unemployment in the United States is hitting record lows, tech sector unemployment is lower still, at around 1.9%. Specialized disciplines, like cybersecurity, have even been flirting with zero percent unemployment.

With demand for cloud know-how white-hot and poised to grow in coming years, there’s never been a better time to upgrade your skills. If you’re already working in the cloud, an advanced certification or specialized track might be just the thing to take your career to the next level. And if you’re in an unrelated field, learning to cloud can help you get your foot in the door and put your career on an entirely new track.
